GENERAL INFO
Philosophy

One Smart K-9 favors the “Balanced Scale Approach” to train dogs. The process begins with motivational speech to encourage a dog towards the desired command. “Praise” is then given once the command is achieved. Likewise, we teach “No” when a taught command is ignored or with bad behaviors. Once your dog understands “Praise & No” you have a reliable way to communicate with your dog to establish Boundaries, Leadership and Respect.

After a residency program you will notice a calmer, more focused dog with a stronger yearning to be near you, not out of neediness but due to the bonding and leadership you provide through training.

Trainer

Hi, my name is Kevin Shellie and I am the Founder and trainer at One Smart K-9. My passion for dogs started as a kid when I learned to dog sit for some of my neighbors. Years later, I hand selected my first dog, a Labrador.

This new puppy prompted my own search for dog training and eventually fly ball and agility. These dog activities lead me to employment at a large boarding and training facility. As I worked my way up to assistant supervisor, I acquired great knowledge about kennel management and caring for dogs. It was at this point I determined that I wanted a career working with man’s best friend. I continued my education at a Dog Training school. After passing written and dog handling tests, I received my certification. It was then that my dream was realized when I founded One Smart K9 in 2005.  My goal is to help dog owners better understand their canine companion and to prevent senseless abandonment due to behavior issues.
